Jharsuguda: Additional district and sessions court, Jharsuguda, on Friday sentenced five people, including two sisters, to life imprisonment for the murder of an 18-year-old college student in 2017 as part of a superstitious ritual.
Judge Subhash Chandra Dhal found the accused guilty of killing Sanjukta Jaipuria during a ritual performed in Bijapali village under Rengali police station limits.
Public prosecutor Prakash Chandra Mohanty said sisters Saudamini Jaipuria (30) and Santoshini Jaipuria (31), along with Sahadev Jaipuria (27), Akshaya Jaipuria (27) and Nabin Bhoi (30), performed the ritual on March 2, 2017, when the victim was unwell.
During the ceremony, the sisters claimed to be possessed and began dancing vigorously on the victim’s body. They stripped Sanjukta, cut her hair, and assaulted her with a trishul and burning incense sticks. The victim’s father’s attempts to intervene were met with violence. Sanjukta died on the spot.
The case was transferred to crime branch, Cuttack, which filed charges against seven accused, including the parents of the accused sisters. The parents were later acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
After examining 47 witnesses and 67 pieces of documentary evidence, the court sentenced all five convicts to life imprisonment. The court has directed the district legal services authority to provide compensation to the victim’s family. The case was initially reported by Sanjukta’s elder sister, Mamta Jaipuria, who filed a complaint at Rengali police station on March 3, 2017.
