41 Santas uphold road safety clauses across city

Mumbai: Police recorded 86 drunk-driving cases between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in the city. Over 1,600 other violations were recorded under the Motor Vehicles Act, police said. On Wednesday, 41 actors dressed as Santa Claus fanned out to over 200 prominent junctions in Mumbai, creating awareness on road safety. The ‘Traffic Santas‘ were accompanied by cops who identified offenders and issued challans.
Joint commissioner, traffic, Anil Kumbhare planned the concept — one Santa for each of the 41 traffic divisions in the city. “The Santas gave out chocolates to those who followed rules. Those who violated rules were given a keychain as a symbol of the commitment expected from them that they would never break the rules again,” said DCP Pradnya Jedge, traffic (south).
Between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, all traffic deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, and other officers were out on the streets for a strict enforcement campaign. Motorists were asked to use breathalysers.
Thane traffic police also undertook a special drive to net drunk drivers across their 18 traffic units; 34 teams with 17 officers collectively recorded 25 cases where motorists and bikers were found driving under the influence of alcohol and were booked. In Navi Mumbai, 41 cases of drunk driving were reported across 18 traffic units on Christmas Eve. The day before, 36 motorists and bikers were caught for drunk driving.
