40 villagers arrested over clash in Ganjam | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Police on Tuesday arrested 40 people from Ramayapatna and Katuru villages in Ganjam district for their alleged involvement in a clash on Monday over the opening of a river mouth.
The district administration also clamped prohibitory orders under Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in these two villages under Golanthara police station to prevent further untoward incidents.
At least eight persons from both villages sustained injuries in the clash, and five of them were admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here as their condition was serious.
The clash occurred when some Ramayapatna residents opened a new mouth in the Bahuda river and diverted the water towards their village, which was opposed by Katuru villagers. Katuru residents feared that fish catch near their village might dwindle after the opening of a new river mouth.
“We have arrested 40 people — 21 from Ramayapatna and 19 from Katuru — for their alleged involvement in the clash, after registering two different cases at Golanthara police station. We are also searching for other persons allegedly involved in the incident,” said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M.
He said three platoons of forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, while patrolling has been intensified in the area. The SP, along with senior police officers, visited the villages on Monday and assessed the situation after discussions with locals. “The situation is now under control,” he said.
Under Section 163 of BNSS, the district administration has prohibited unlawful assembly, provocative speech and hate content, carrying weapons, and restricted public processions and demonstrations.
Temporary restrictions on the movement of both villagers and the entry of outsiders, who are suspected of instigating violence, have been imposed, official sources said.
