Vasai: Five days after ED seized Rs 8.6 crore in cash for as well as diamond-studded jewellery and bullion worth Rs 23.2 crore from his Hyderabad residence, deputy director of town planning in Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) Y S Reddy was suspended on Monday.VVMC commissioner Anilkumar Pawar said the suspension order has been forwarded to the ED office, the chief secretary and the principal secretary.ED had searched offices and residences in Vasai-Virar, Mumbai and Hyderabad over a case pertaining to the illegal construction since 2009 of 41 residential-cum-commercial buildings on private land and on plots reserved for sewage treatment plants and a dumping ground under VVMC’s jurisdiction. The buildings were demolished a few months ago following SC’s order. Reddy was on leave and in Hyderabad during the ED action.ED believes there are more VVMC officials involved in the case.Reddy was nabbed by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in 2016 for allegedly offering Sena corporator Dhananjay Gawade Rs 25 lakh to not expose a nexus between the construction mafia and VVMC officials. ACB had recovered valuables worth Rs 3 crore. Reddy was acquitted in that case and he later resumed his position. Gawade said he will appeal against the quashing of that FIR. He sought a departmental inquiry against Reddy and said he has asked that a new town planning official be appointed in his place.
