3-year RI for ’16 attack on cop on court premises | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: Nine years after an undertrial accused, brought before a special MCOCA court for a hearing, assaulted a police constable after he was reprimanded for unruly behaviour, a sessions court has convicted and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment.
The accused, Ashfak Sayyad, was brought to court for a hearing in a case of firing at producer Karim Morani’s Khar bungalow in 2014. He was acquitted in that case in 2023.
“In the present case, all witnesses, including the informant, categorically stated the incident. There is no reason why the police persons should be speaking against the accused. There is nothing to show that they have any enmity or grudge against the accused… The accused used criminal force to deter the complainant from discharging his duty, and he assaulted him with fist blows,” the judge said.
On Nov 23, 2016, Sayyad was being escorted by police officers at the sessions court when he became unruly. When a police constable, Vilas Pawar, reprimanded him, he threatened Pawar, assaulted him and attempted to tear his uniform. The incident was witnessed by many persons, including other police officers and court officials. tnn
