Hyderabad: Three children and their mother, who tried to save them, drowned in a pond in Yellareddy in Kamareddy district on Saturday night.
The incident happened around 7pm when the three children entered the Yellareddypedda Cheruvu to take bath while their mother Monika (26) was washing clothes. The pond is close to the family’s fields.
The bodies of Monika and the children – Mythili (10), Akshara (9) and Vinay (7) – were retrieved on Sunday morning. Vinay was in class 3 and his two sisters in class 5 and 6. They studied at a govt school in Medak.
Police said the children drowned as they had waded into a spot where there was a pit.
“On hearing the children’s screams, Monika appears to have tried to rescue them. But she too drowned along with the children,” a cop from Yellareddy police station said.
Monika’s husband Lingaiah is a labourer. On Saturday night when he returned home, his father told him that Monika and the children had gone to the pond. But when they did not return till late in the night, Lingaiah went to the water body to look for them, police said.
“When he found the children’s clothes near the pond, he called the villagers to help him in searching for them in the night,” a cop said.
Finally, on Sunday morning, villagers found the bodies in the pond.
Police registered a case of suspicious death and started an investigation.
