Cuttack: Three men were sentenced to undergo imprisonment for life (remainder of natural life) by the adhoc additional district and sessions court (fast-track) here on Friday for raping a mentally challenged girl in Oct 2000.The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 65,000 each on the convicts — Mangaraj Bhoi (49), Amar Bhoi (32) and Aruttam Bhoi (32). The district legal services authority (DLSA) was asked to provide a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the girl in her 20s.Judge P K Das said that “in view of the mental development” of the girl at the time of occurrence of crime, the nature and gravity of offences committed and her family background, the relation between her and accused and since she became pregnant and gave birth to a child, “this court feels it is necessary to award a sum of Rs 8 lakh towards compensation”.The three co-villagers raped the girl and threatened to kill he if she disclosed the crime. On July 22, 2021 she was admitted to a govt hospital and gave birth to a male child. But the baby died after two days. Her brother reported the crime at the nearest police outpost on July 27, 2021. The FIR was registered under sections 376 (D) and 376 (20(n) of the IPC on the same day and the three accused were arrested on July 30, 2021. All three were in jail till the trial court convicted them on Friday.
