3 from Mum arrested for job fraud in city

Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police arrested three Mumbai residents from a hotel in Kharavel Nagar area here on Monday for allegedly orchestrating a job scam that promised lucrative employment opportunities in Israel. The arrests came following intelligence provided by the ministry of external affairs (MEA).
The accused, Babulahari Gouda (42), Mahesh Ramchandra Lokhande (40), and Kiran Shashikant Ghumre (51), were arrested while conducting unauthorised recruitment interviews at a local hotel here.
According to police officials, the suspects ran an elaborate scheme using social media platforms to advertise fake job positions in Israel. They created counterfeit documents mimicking official notifications from the ministry of labour & employment to lend credibility to their operation.
“The accused charged Rs 5,000 as an initial processing fee and demanded Rs 70,000 for issuing offer letters,” said DCP Jagmohan Meena. They targeted job seekers looking for unskilled positions such as fitters, helpers, and store keepers in Israel.
The scam came to light when Sunil Kumar Sah, protector of emigrants (MEA) in Bhubaneswar, filed a complaint on Sunday, prompting immediate action from Kharavel Nagar police.
Investigation revealed that the suspects had no authorisation from either the ministry of external affairs or any registered recruitment agency to facilitate overseas employment. Police recovered numerous candidates’ resumes and forged documents during the arrest.
“This case highlights the importance of verifying job offers through official channels. Job seekers should be cautious of unauthorized recruiters promising international employment opportunities,” DCP Meena said, adding police are investigating the full extent of the scam and urged other potential victims to come forward with information.
