3 cops injured in attack in Darbhanga

Patna: Three policemen, including one Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and one Probationary Sub-Inspector (PSI), suffered serious injuries on Saturday after villagers attacked a police team that went to arrest an accused in a dowry and atrocity case at Abhanda village under Laheriasarai police station area in Darbhanga district, an official said.
The accused, Jitendra Yadav, a resident of Abhanda village, was evading arrest in the dowry and atrocity case. The police team on Saturday reached the village to execute an arrest warrant issued by a family court, police said.
“The family members of the accused and other villagers suddenly attacked the police team. They also forcibly freed the accused. Later, locals burnt tyres on the village roads to prevent policemen from reaching the accused’s house,” Darbhanga (Sadar) Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Amit Kumar told reporters.
The SDPO said additional security forces were sent to the village, but they also came under attack from the villagers. He said the villagers pelted stones at the members of the police team.
“However, the tense situation could be brought under control after police resorted to mild lathi-charge,” the SDPO said.
He said three policemen, including ASI RK Dubey, PSI Amit Kumar, and one constable, were injured in the attack.
