3 assailants behead cop volunteer in broad daylight on city ROB, held | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Three days after coming out on bail in a drug trafficking case, a woman, her husband and their associate allegedly beheaded a police volunteer in broad daylight on the busy Rasulgarh overbridge here Wednesday, suspecting he was responsible for her arrest.
The accused, who were identified as Lipika Nayak, her husband, Laxmidhar, and their associate Rocky Nayak, were arrested from Nayagarh district within hours after the crime.
Deceased Sahadeb Nayak (36), who was a ‘police mitra’ (volunteer) living in the Kedarpalli slum here, was an anti-drugs campaigner, police sources said.
“Lipika was arrested by the excise department recently. She suspected that Sahadeb helped the excise sleuths arrest her. She hatched his murder plot with the other two accused,” police commissioner S Dev Datta Singh told TOI.
DCP Pinak Mishra said, “We arrested all the accused involved in the crime within a few hours after the crime. Motive of the murder is previous enmity.”
The gruesome incident occurred around 7.30 am when Sahadeb, who also served as president of the sweepers’ association of Bhubaneswar, was travelling on his two-wheeler towards Rasulgarh from Vani Vihar on NH-16 after dropping his nine-year-old daughter at school.
The accused who came on two bikes wearing helmets, waylaid Nayak on the Rasulgarh ROB and attacked him in full public view. When Nayak attempted to flee after falling from his bike, the attackers chased him and used a sword to sever his head.
The savage attack caused panic among commuters and onlookers. A morning walker in his fifties reportedly lost consciousness upon seeing the decapitated body and blood on the road.
Nayak’s wife, Sunita, alleged he had been opposing illicit activities, particularly brown sugar trafficking in the locality.
“My husband was helping the police to nab drug peddlers and other criminals in our locality. There was a threat to his life. They even unsuccessfully attempted to frame my husband in a false drug trafficking case,” she said.
The murder unsettled many residents, particularly considering the presence of 90 police platoons and 11 CAPF companies deployed for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and enhanced patrolling.
