Chennai: Tamil Nadu has recorded a 24% drop in road accident facalities in Jan 2025 as compared to the same period last year. A press release said highway patrol teams rescued 865 critically injured people, ensuring timely hospital transport during the golden hour. The teams provided assistance to 2,186 accident victims throughout the state so far this year.
Besides regular road safety initiatives in high-risk locations, police have introduced a new programme to train villagers near accident-prone areas as first responders, by providing them with essential life-saving techniques for emergency situations.
In Jan 2025, the state saw 1,247 road accidents which claimed 1,295 lives. During the same period last year, there were 1,635 accidents and 1,715 deaths.
In Jan 2025, the Tamil Nadu recorded over 1.17 lakh road rule violations, including overspeed, signal jumping, mobile phone usage while driving, and drunk-driving offences. They also registered 6.1 lakh cases for helmet and seat belt violations, besides 12.7 lakh Motor Vehicle Act infractions. The authorities recommended suspension of 31,351 driving licences.
The police force organised more than 4,800 road safety awareness sessions in Jan, reaching over 3.4 lakh people, including bus drivers, auto-rickshaw operators, students, and the general public.
