Patna: A total of 23 police personnel from state will receive bravery medals this Independence Day. Among them, five policemen will be awarded Medal for Gallantry, including one posthumously. Besides, 16 police personnel will receive Medal for Meritorious Service, and two will be felicitated with the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service.
The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service will be awarded to Sanjay Singh (ADG, law and order) and DSP Rajesh Kumar Sharma.Besides sub-inspector Aashish Kumar Singh, who will receive the gallantry medal posthumously, four constables Durgesh Kumar Yadav, Rohit Kumar Ranjan, Akshay Kumar and Bijendra Kumar will also receive the award for their acts of bravery during an encounter with a criminal gang in Khagaria district on October 12, 2018.
According to a release issued by Bihar Police headquarters, acting on a tip-off, a team of Pasraha police in Khagaria, led by then SHO Aashish Kumar raided village Dudhaila Diara where Dinesh Muni was hiding with his gang.
“The SHO and his team of constables had to walk 18 km to reach the village on the border of Naugachia and Khagaria districts. Upon arrival, they were met with indiscriminate firing, and they retaliated in turn, during which constable Yadav was shot in the leg. Despite this, SHO Aashish Kumar continued to lead his team and was severely injured and later succumbed to his injuries,” the release said, adding one criminal died in the encounter, besides arms and ammunition were recovered.
The gallantry medal is given to recognise the bravery and sacrifice of personnel from armed forces, other legally constituted forces, officials, personnel and civilians.
