Mumbai: Fourteen years after two bike-borne men, one a criminal with seven cases, assaulted a cop to avoid being arrested, a sessions court convicted and sentenced them to two years of rigorous imprisonment each. The main accused, Javed Shaikh (36), even brandished a knife.
Refusing to grant leniency to the duo, Shaikh and Imtiyaz Kharadhi (31), the judge said that there appeared to be no reformation after the passage of time in the conduct of the accused and no likelihood of further reformation.

“A stringent view is necessitated while sentencing the accused for their misdeed and to send a message that any transgression or violation of law would be dealt with strictly and may invite severe punishment,” Additional Sessions Judge Shashikant E Bangar said.
The victim was also granted Rs 10,000 compensation from the fine imposed on the accused.
The victim, police constable Deepak Sangle, testified that he had been assigned to Antop Hill police station from Jun 2008 to Aug 2014, and was part of the ‘Gunda Squad’. He stated that on Jul 7, 2011, while undergoing daytime training in another area, he received a call instructing him to report to the police station. Sangle recounted being informed about wanted externed suspects, Javed and Imtiyaz.
He said that around 11 pm, with other cops, he went towards Bharani naka. As the team parked their motorcycles and spoke with an informant, one of the cops spotted the two accused riding by on a motorcycle. The police team began to pursue them. During the chase, near Shaikh Mistri Darga, the person riding pillion, identified as accused Imtiyaz, allegedly elbowed Sangle, causing him to fall off his bike. Sangle identified Imtiyaz in court.
As Sangle fell, the accused also lost control of their motorcycle and fell. At this point, the police team reached the spot. Sangle deposed that Javed then brandished a weapon at another cop, but he managed to dodge the blow with his lathi. Javed allegedly yelled obscenities and threatened to kill anyone who approached him. Sangle identified Javed too in court.
