Bhubaneswar: Two workers were killed and another injured when a speeding dumper crashed into a road-roller during road construction in Rekula village in Dhenkanal district late Monday night.
The deceased have been identified as Khirod Sahu (54) from Nua Rekula village, and Babuli Sabara (47) from Ratab village in Deogarh district. Kamakhyanagar SDPO Gyana Ranjan Mishra said the speeding dumper hit the road-roller during road paving, crushing the workers against an electric pole. The truck driver fled the scene.
“There were no barricades or warning signs at the construction site,” Mishra told TOI.
“Another accident had occurred at the same location earlier that evening,” added Kamakhyanagar police station inspector in-charge (IIC), Asish Kumar Jena.
CM Mohan Charan Majhi has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased and assured free medical treatment for the injured worker.
Locals blocked the Kamakhyanagar-Dhenkanal road, demanding justice for the victims and action against the contractor for failing to implement proper safety measures at the site. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
