Chennai: In separate accidents, two people, including a schoolteacher, lost their lives after falling from buildings in Chennai.
In Ayanavaram, a construction worker from Uttar Pradesh, Durgesh Gupta, 40, died after falling from the third floor while under the influence of alcohol. Another worker, Virijesh, 35, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a private hospital for intensive treatment. The incident took place at the residence of Gunasekhar, 50, a resident of Malaipan Street, Ayanavaram, who was renovating his three-storey apartment building.
Durgesh Gupta and Virijesh, both engaged in renovation work for the past one and a half months, were chatting near the balcony railing when they accidentally fell. Upon hearing the fall, Gunasekhar and neighbors rescued Virijesh and admitted him to the hospital. The Ayanavaram police registered a case and are investigating.
In Otteri, 37-year-old D Devika, a resident of an apartment complex on Strahans Road, jumped off the ninth floor, distressed over a family dispute.
Police said she had sent a message to her husband, Dinesh, but by the time he reached home, Devika had jumped. Upon receiving the information, police recovered her body, which was later sent to Govt General Hospital for an autopsy. A case has been registered in connection with the incident. The couple have two daughters, aged 19 and 12.
