2 BJP men killed as truck rams into car
Sambalpur: Two local BJP functionaries were killed and two others sustained injuries when a speeding tipper truck hit their car from behind thrice near the Kantapali overbridge on NH-53 here early Sunday.
“Police are probing whether it was an accident or a pre-planned murder,” said Sambalpur SP Mukesh Bhamoo, who assured of a thorough investigation.
The deceased have been identified as Debendra Nayak, BJP’s mandal president of Goshala and a resident of Kardola village, and Muralidhar Chhuria, a party member from Charapali village. A group of six, including the deceased, were returning from the Bhubaneswar residence of former BJP MLA Nauri Nayak, with whom they were closely associated, to Chipilima when the accident occurred at 1:30 am.
According to sources, the truck first hit the car from behind; and again after a 100-metre distance. The victims then diverted onto a village road to avoid further accident, but the truck allegedly hit them once more, causing severe damage and overturning the car.
Upon being informed, police rushed the victims to Vimsar, Burla for treatment. However, Nayak and Chhuria succumbed to their injuries. The truck driver has been detained, and the vehicle, which was carrying fly ash, has been seized.
Injured passengers alleged the truck deliberately rammed their car multiple times. Nayak said, “The way the truck hit the car three times clearly points to pre-planned murder. We expect the police to conduct a fair investigation.”
“We have seized the vehicle and detained the driver. The investigation will probe whether it was an accident or murder. We have noted the allegations that it is a conspiracy,” said Bhamoo.
Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, currently visiting Sambalpur, visited Vimsar to meet the injured.
