Bhubaneswar: A local court on Friday handed down 18-month sentences to three individuals for robbing an elderly woman in July, marking the first conviction in Bhubaneswar under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The court of judicial magistrate first class (JMFC-V) found Ganesh Purty, Sankar Das and Sheikh Niyamat guilty. The incident occurred on July 8 when Pushpalata Nayak and her relative were on morning walk near BDA Park in Palaspalli under Airport police station limits. The trio intercepted them, and threatening them with a dagger, stole her gold chain.
The police arrested the accused some days later after examining CCTV footage of the locality.
“We submitted the chargesheet on time and ensured the first conviction under the BNS in our city within seven months. Purty, Das and Niyamat are habitual criminals,” DCP Pinak Mishra said.
Police records showed Purty had 50 previous cases against him, while Das and Niyamat had 30 and 20 cases, respectively.
The police clarified that instead of Section 304 of BNS, which relates to snatching cases, they charged the accused under Section 309 (4) for robbery, as they used a weapon to intimidate the victim before taking her chain.
