17-ft-high statue of ex-PM Vajpayee inaugurated in silk city
Berhampur: A 17-ft-high life-size bronze statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was unveiled by BJP‘s state unit president Manmohan Samal in silk city on Wednesday to mark his 100th birth anniversary.
Around Rs 20 lakh was spent on making the first statue of Vajpayee in Berhampur, said local MLA K Anil Kumar. A local sculptor built the statue. He said the entire amount was borne from his MLA-LAD funds.
Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy and several BJP MLAs, including Krushna Chandra Nayak (Chhatrapur) and Manoranjan Dyan Samantara (Chikiti), and party supporters, among others were present.
Samal highlighted Vajpayee’s contributions to the state, such as AIIMS Bhubaneswar, oil refinery at Paradip, the Golden Quadrilateral highway, and PM Gram Sadak Yojana during his regime.
Anil Kumar said they are also trying to create a park in silk city in Vajpayee’s name. Nayak said at least three life-size bronze statues of the former PM would be installed in his assembly segment soon.
A blood donation camp was also held on the occasion, organised by the supporters of Samantara.
