NAVI MUMBAI: The carcass of an 18ft-long Baleen whale washed ashore at Varsoli beach in Alibaug Sunday morning. Forest officials, assisted by a veterinary doctor, inspected the whale at the spot. The carcass was buried at the beach after completion of formalities. Samples have been kept by the forest department for expert opinion.
Local fishermen had alerted the forest department’s mangrove cell about the incident around 11am during high tide hours. The floating carcass started moving to the shore and returning to the sea. The low tide helped forest officials reach the whale. Around 500 people turned up at the beach to watch the sea mammal.
The forest department officials had claimed that the whale is around 1,500kg in weight. Range forest officer Sameer Shinde said the cause of death remains a mystery as of now with no injury sign seen on its body.
