1,500 Buddhist monks to meditate at Diamond Triangle to promote peace

Kendrapada: Around 1,500 Buddhist monks, including 85 foreigners, will gather to meditate at the Buddhist sites of Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri in Jajpur district from Jan 12 to 16.
“Buddhist monks from 12 countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, USA and other countries, will participate in the meditation programme,” said Ranjan Kumar, chief organiser of the event.
He said the rich Buddhist heritage of these sites remains relatively unknown globally. “Our five-day-long meditation will be useful for them to know about the historic Buddhist sites,” he added.
Participants will also visit the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) museums at Ratnagiri and Lalitgiri. Kumar further said the Buddhist sites at Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri, and Udayagiri, known as the ‘Diamond Triangle’, “remind us of our past”. “The state has become a celebrated centre of Buddhism, attracting many scholars and saints to this serene land for ages,” he said.
The five-day event includes discussions on the challenges of Buddhism, world peace and site conservation, alongside exhibitions of artefacts, sculptures, manuscripts, and more. The initiative seeks to spread Buddha’s teachings of peace, harmony and solidarity.
“Exhibitions on ritual artefacts, sculptures, paintings, published books, manuscripts and photos related to Buddhism and Buddhist sites will be showcased during the five-day programme,” said Prakash Nayak, one of the organisers.
“All the 1,500 monks will stay for five days at these Buddhist sites, for which the district administration, police and other govt and non-govt agencies are making all the arrangements to ensure the programme’s success,” said an official.
