15 students rescued after fleeing hostel over abuse fears in S’garh | Bhubaneswar News

Rourkela: Fifteen students from a govt primary school in Sundargarh district‘s Sihidia village were rescued by police early Wednesday after they escaped from their hostel on Tuesday night, fearing physical abuse by the cook-cum-attendant.
A Barkote police patrol team found the children around nine km from their school in Deogarh district’s Amagaon. The children were later handed over to school authorities on Wednesday morning following coordination between Mahulpada and Barkote police. The govt primary school in Sundargarh district’s Bonai block has 71 students from Classes I to V, including 43 residing in the hostel. The 15 students, from Classes II to IV, secretly left the hostel through a toilet door and scaled the school wall with their belongings. The hostel cook-cum-attendant, Amit Kumar Tahul, informed the in-charge headmistress, Draupadi Sahu, about them. Following her instructions, Tahul and his brother searched for them before the police intervened.
IIC of Mahulpada police station, S Pradhan, investigated the matter at the school. On instructions from Bonai block education officer (BEO) Sunil Mundu, assistant block education officer (ABEO) Baburam Mahanta, and cluster resource centre coordinator (CRCC) Fakir Mohan Kaibarta conducted a detailed inquiry on Wednesday afternoon.
Discussions with guardians, school staff, and students confirmed allegations of physical abuse against Tahul, prompting action. “We have taken this issue seriously and sent officials to investigate. The students revealed that the cook-cum-attendant used to beat them. Further inquiry is in progress,” said Sunil Mundu, BEO, Bonai.
A meeting has been scheduled on Thurasday by the in-charge headmistress to address the matter, with attendance from ABEO, CRCC, the school managing committee, and the student’s guardians. “A resolution will be passed against the cook-cum-attendant, after which he will be dismissed immediately,” confirmed Mundu.
