149 cases of public disrobing of women reported in Jan: CM | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The state reported 111 murder cases and 149 cases of public disrobing of women in Jan, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the assembly on Monday. The state also reported 79 cases of sexual harassment in Jan, with Jajpur district recording the highest of 56 molestation cases, the CM said in a written reply to a question by Dasapalla MLA Ramesh Behera.
Behera had sought information on the number of cases of theft, dacoity, murder, molestation, sexual harassment, stalking, rioting and cyber frauds reported in 2024-25 and steps taken to punish the guilty. “The state govt is implementing an emergency response support system (ERSS) which is available 24 hours. People can avail of this service by dialling the toll-free number 112 in emergency situations. For preventing and addressing crimes against women and children, the govt has established a new branch called the ‘Crime Against Women & Children Wing’ (CAW & CW) under the CID in Bhubaneswar. This branch actively investigates serious crimes against women and children,” the CM said.
“Under crimes against women, certain sensitive cases are being treated as ‘red flag’ cases. These cases are being handled with precision by the designated investigating officer,” the CM added. “The women and child crime prevention unit in Bhubaneswar, in collaboration with Unicef, has operationalised the Sampark helpline, a toll-free number 18004191813, for the prevention of gender-based violence. For the successful investigation of crimes against women and children, 633 designated police stations across the state are actively working,” the CM stated.
Serious cases such as sensitive murders, dacoity, organised crime, cybercrime, economic offences, drug-related offences and other crimes are being monitored by the DIG and IG under the ‘orange flag case’ initiative to assist the officers, the CM said. Additionally, to address issues of child and human trafficking across all districts, the Integrated Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (IAHTU) has been established. In Odisha, a total of 37 specially trained officers and employees are working in 36 district branches and the CAW & CW to combat these issues, he said.
Majhi said that 194 cybercrimes were reported in Jan. To address cybercrimes, the CM said 14 cybercrime and economic offence police stations have been functional in the state since 2021. An exclusive cyber police station has been functioning in Cuttack since Oct 2, 2006. Additionally, a proposal has been submitted to the state govt for opening more cybercrime and economic offence police stations. “Over time, the state crime branch has organised training programmes to enhance the skills of officers in successfully investigating cybercrime cases,” the CM said.
