Berhampur: At least 12 ‘water warriors‘ from the state, including two from Ganjam district, who played pivotal roles in water management in their villages, have been invited as special guests to the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path, New Delhi, on Sunday.
The 12 individuals, all members of the village water and sanitation committees (VWSC)s, were nominated by the state govt for their efforts under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), which aims to provide safe and sustainable drinking water to every household. They left from Bhubaneswar station on Thursday and have reached New Delhi.
“They were selected to attend the Republic Day parade in New Delhi in recognition of their outstanding contribution to water management and sanitation,” said Surendra Behera, assistant chief engineer, rural water supply and sanitation (RWSS), who led them as the nodal officer.
The two selected from Ganjam district are Tuna Jena, secretary of the VWSC in Golanthara, and Sanat Kumar Nayak, president of the VWSC in Kanisi, both under Rangeilunda block.
“Through community meetings and with active support from the officials, piped water connections have been provided in almost all households in our village,” said Tuna. Sanat Kumar transformed his village by repairing leakages and promoting water conservation by holding meetings among the villagers.
The other individuals selected included two from Cuttack, two from Balasore, and one each from Koraput, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Nuapada, Bargarh and Sambalpur, official sources said.
“Besides attending the parade, they will visit the Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra, Raj Ghat, National War Memorial, India Gate and meet Jal Shakti minister C R Patil in Delhi,” Behera said.
