11-yr-old drowns in civic pool, FIR against sports complex mgmt

Mumbai: An 11-year-old boy, Granth Mutha, drowned while learning to swim in a pool inside a civic body-owned sports complex, which is managed by a private agency, in Bhayandar (E) Golden Nest area on Sunday afternoon, reports
Navghar police have registered an FIR with death by negligence charge against 4 instructors and the sports complex management and are confirming the responsibilities of those involved in organising the summer camp there. Police said they will also check CCTV camera footage of the pool area to verify the sequence of events.
The boy’s father, Hasmukh, blamed the complex management for security lapses causing his son’s death. “I learnt about my son’s death only after reaching the hospital. He could have been saved if given timely aid at the pool.”
The 11-year-old’s father, Hasmukh blamed the sports complex management and told TOI, “My son joined the swimming class last week. The batch starts at 11am, and the incident may have taken place around 11.45am or noon. Around 12.15am, a friend called and asked me to rush to Tunga Hospital. He could have been saved if given timely aid care at the pool itself.”
On Saturday, two men drowned in separate incidents in Palghar district. Abhishek Birhade (24) went for a swim with friends in Surya dam at Maswan village. He ventured into the deep water and drowned. Sagar Marde (18), a student from Sarni village in Dahanu taluka, was swept away while swimming in an irrigation canal. His body was found 100m downstream from where he went missing.
