100 kg of crackers seized from illegal unit | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar/Puri: Puri police on Thursday seized more than 100 kg of illegal crackers, explosives, and bomb-making materials from a house in a cramped lane of Puri’s Nabakalebar area, averting a potential hazard.
According to cops, the street, home to more than 500 residents, was essentially situated in a small arsenal where any spark could have triggered a disaster. Police assessment suggests that an explosion of the seized explosives inside the home could have impacted an area within 500 metres of the illegal manufacturing unit.
“We acted on a tip-off and raided the house. Accused Ajit Senapati has been arrested. His suspected links with other manufacturers are being ascertained. The seized explosives will be disposed of amid all safety protocols,” SP (Puri) Vinit Agrawal told TOI.
Police took the assistance of fire tenders to spray water on the seized crackers to prevent any untoward incident. The accused had been operating the unauthorised fireworks unit while maintaining a facade of a puja shop, with religious items displayed on the front of the premises, the SP said.
Police have strengthened their enforcement against crackers in Puri ahead of the ensuing festival period, following a tragic incident on May 29, 2024, when 17 people, including eight minors, lost their lives in a cracker explosion at Narendra pond during Chandan Yatra.
