NEW DELHI: A 42-year-old woman lost her life, and three others suffered from severe suffocation after a fire broke out in an 11-floor residential building in Mumbai early Sunday morning, a fire department official confirmed.
The blaze erupted at 6.11am at Panna Ali Mansion, located in the Masjid Bandar area of south Mumbai.
Fire officials stated that the flames were primarily confined to the electric wiring and installations in the common meter box area and electric wiring in the common passage on the ground floor.
Thick smoke spread rapidly through the building, affecting several residents.
Two women who were in the common passage on the first floor sustained burn injuries on their hands and legs and suffered severe suffocation due to the dense smoke.
Tragically, one of them, identified as Sabila Khatun Shaikh (42), succumbed to her injuries following the incident.
In addition, a man on the sixth floor and a woman on the eighth floor also suffered from suffocation. They, along with another affected individual, were identified as Karim Shaikh (20), Sajiya Alam Shaikh (30), and Shahin Shaikh (22). They were rushed to the government-run JJ Hospital, where their condition was reported to be stable, according to hospital authorities.
Firefighters responded quickly, and the blaze was completely extinguished by 6.31am, preventing further casualties and damage.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, and an investigation is under way.
Blaze at Freemasons Hall: Firefighter sustains injuries
A 25-year-old firefighter, Pankaj Parshuram Bhoir, sustained injuries while bravely battling a fire that broke out at Freemasons Hall, located opposite Sterling Cinema in Fort, on Saturday afternoon.
According to fire officials, the blaze erupted in an office on the second floor of the ground-plus-two structure, quickly filling the entire building with thick, suffocating smoke. Responding swiftly, the fire department dispatched three fire engines, an ambulance, and a breathing apparatus van to the scene to contain the flames and ensure the safety of those inside.
During the firefighting operation, Bhoir suffered injuries to his right hand. He was immediately transported to GT Hospital in a mobile police van, where doctors confirmed that he was receiving medical treatment for his wounds.
